Newcomers' Pairs

The Suffolk Bridge Association introduced a new event this year, the Newcomers' Pairs. The format is novel in that one member of each partnership is a newcomer to duplicate bridge and the other an experienced player. Only methods the newcomers were comfortable with were entertained - this wasn't a teaching session – and the event was played at a relaxed pace.

Some newcomers were there at with a bridge playing friend or other-half although it would often not be clear at which party's behest. Others however took the plunge and arrived to be paired with an experienced stranger. The eventual winners, newcomer Sonia Allfrey playing with county player David Morran, met for the first time that evening and obviously got on well. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the event looks likely to be an addition to the calendar.

A hand from the event; you are West, dealer and hold an easy (12-14) no-trump:

When partner replies with a natural and non-forcing two heart bid, what do say?

Just because you don't have to bid over two hearts doesn't mean you must pass. You certainly shouldn't try and 'rescue' partner to a better spot but when you like the development, you are free to bid. I'm glad to say my partner essayed a gentle raise to three hearts which became the final contract:

North, the mentor in their partnership was understandably reluctant to get involved over 1NT in a bidding battle with a heart suit from South and all appeared to be going nicely when we claimed the suit. However, the raise to the three level did for him. With no absolute guarantee of success for either double or three spades he went quietly. Three hearts did not play well after the West hand was forced to ruff a diamond and I couldn't even pick up trumps. I was down three for -150 but North-South have eleven tricks in spades, scoring 200 in a partscore or 650 in game.

Those who play transfers here (East bidding two diamonds to show hearts) accept that West might raise with support but those with straightforward methods forbid West to bid even with a fit. Rather odd I've always thought.
