Felixstowe Congress

After canvassing those present in 2006, this year's Felixstowe Congress was over two days. The event had made a partial move to that format last year, holding the pairs on the Saturday and the teams on the Sunday but with subsidiary competitions on Friday afternoon and evening. The numbers for the Swiss teams were up this year but the pairs were slightly lower. It was encouraging to see several players from outside Suffolk and Essex.

This year the excellent value of local bridge was enhanced by sponsorship from Dummett Copp, a firm of International Patent and Trade Mark attorneys based in Suffolk. In the environment of diminished interest in congresses, all this represents a modest success but the Suffolk Association will continue the dialogue with its members and act on their responses.

Not too much room for a complete deal this week, so I'll leave you with a problem. As East you defend four hearts with bots sides vulnerable:

Partner leads the knave of spades, covered in dummy. How do you see the defence going? Would it help if I told you West had led a singleton?
